Year of the Jubilee 2000
This celebration is the anniversary of Christianity when Catholic pilgrims are supposed to descend on the Eternal City from all over the world.
The city of Rome and the Vatican spent three years and millions of dollars preparing for this event in public works projects designed show off the city by restoring monuments, archaeological sites, churches, and updating museums.
Building projects included: a new subway line to the Vatican, three new railway lines from neighboring cities, a convention center, a third runway at airport, updated the existing main rail station, added more disability and environmentally friendly buses, created a more navigable river, better parking for buses near the Vatican, and 50 new churches, most of them serving congregations in the city's rapidly growing suburbs and banned much of the vehicle traffic from the historic center during the day.
